Blood Donation Guidelines
Who Can Donate Blood?
Eligibility Criteria
- Age: 18-65 years
- Weight: Minimum 50 kg (110 lbs)
- Hemoglobin: Minimum 12.5 g/dL
- Blood Pressure: Normal range
- Pulse Rate: 60-100 bpm
- Body Temperature: Normal
Who Should Not Donate
- Cold or flu symptoms
- Recent surgery or major illness
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Recent tattoos or piercings
- High-risk behaviors
- Certain chronic diseases
Before Donation
Preparation Tips
- Get a good night's sleep (7-8 hours)
- Eat a healthy meal rich in iron
- Drink plenty of water (extra 16 oz before donation)
- Avoid fatty foods before donation
- Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up
- Bring your ID and donor card (if you have one)
During Donation
- Registration: Show your ID and complete registration
- Health Screening: Answer confidential health questions and have vital signs checked
- Donation: The actual donation takes about 8-10 minutes
- Refreshment: Rest for 10-15 minutes and enjoy refreshments
After Donation
Post-Donation Care
- Rest for 15 minutes and have refreshments
- Drink extra fluids for the next 24-48 hours
- Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Keep the bandage on for at least 5 hours
- If you feel dizzy, lie down with your feet up
- Eat healthy meals and avoid alcohol for 24 hours
Donation Frequency
Whole Blood
Every 56 days (8 weeks)
Platelets
Every 7 days, up to 24 times/year
Plasma
Every 28 days, up to 13 times/year
